BMWMCHR Monthly Club Rides

We do ride more than once a month! But, we also have group rides that are monthly events from April until September, almost always on the 3rd Saturday of the month. These are all day affairs (some are even overnight) lead by a different club member each month to encourage variety; I just coordinate them. Our club rides generally include meeting at a starting point for breakfast (optional), riding till lunch (with a break for fuel, stretching, and using the facilities), then after lunch continuing on the second half (again, with suitable rests). I encourage the ride leader to plan bail out spots where you can easily drop out if you have something better to do (Huh?), with lunch being the most likely. The monthly description, meeting details, and leader are listed at the start of the month in the NEXT Ride box above.

These rides are designed to be fun and to experience roads you may not have taken, see sights worth seeing, and even experience new riding conditions such as dual sporting from street to dirt to street (none of these on the list yet). They are NOT races and they are not for showing off; they are for your and your companions enjoyment. Therefore, make sure your machine is in safe operating condition and has a full tank of gas.

We are seeking voluteers to lead our rides from April to September, so please contact our ride coordinator at rideleader1@bmwmchr.org.

(See Events page).

17 - 18 June - Highland Inn in Monterrey, VA

Met at the Burger King on Route-17 in Newport News.  We went up route 143 and paralleled the expressway at times with Bob providing great ride leadership.  Eventually we got on US-60 to Richmond.  We took I-295 around Richmond but soon dropped off to take Route 6 toward I-81.  It was I-81 north a short ways to Route 250 which runs thru Staunton and to Monterrey.  We did a local ride thru the mountains of West Virginia on Saturday and had a wonderful ride back on Sunday via US-60.    Click here to view pictures.

21 August 2004 - Edenton, North Carolina

Met at the Race Track gas station just south of the James River Bridge on Route 17 and proceed south to Edenton via a route only Marvin knew.  He sure picked a great route and the weather was great.  Lots of sun and not too hot.  Great riding weather.  We had a great lunch in Edenton not far from the water.  We did pick up some rain just as we were nearing the Virginia boarder and a little heaver when we got to Suffolk.  Click here to see pictures.

17 July 2004 - Met at Frank's Trucking Center.  Destination:  Chip Oaks Plantation.  Click here for photos.

Ride met at Franks Trucking Center, at 9:00 am and and followed a route, that seemed subject to change as we rode, taking us on a nice ride through Peanut Country. In many places the corn look to be 10 feet tall.  Wonderful country.   There were eight riders.  Jim Richardson was leader with Marvin riding sweep keeping us slow pokes up with the heard.  We stopped for an early lunch at Pete's.  Jim can tell you how to get to this wonderful and friendly restaurant as a few of us were so lost we would not have been able to get home except for the expert leadership of Jim and Marvin.  A few riders decide to visit Chip Oaks Plantation and State Park and visit the peanut festival.  We'll have to ask them what kind of food they had.  The remaining eight took the ferry across to Jamestown and head for home.  Yours truly split off from the group as they sped off toward I-64 and took US-60 south hoping for less traffic.  A great ride.  Jim and Marvin get a big thank you for a great ride. Bob thanks for the photos -ed

15 May 2004 - Jim Richards lead a group to a Street Rod show at the Best Western near Busch Gardens, Williamsburg.  They departed Frank's Truck Stop in Chesapeake.  Rt 460 Alt - Rt 337 Portsmouth Blvd, Rt 125 Kings Highway, Rt 32 south, right on to Rt 603 Everets Rd, Rt 603 thru Windsor, becomes Griffin Road, left onto Rt 616, and rest at "For Petes Sake" restaurant.  Right onto Rt 628, Wakefield Road, thru Wakefield, left onto Rt 31 north, take ferry at Scotland to Jamestown, right at Festival Part and turn left onto Colonial Parkway south, right at ramp marked "Newport News" onto Rt 199, (You could also just go straight up the road from the ferry to Rt 199 and turn right - ed),  take Rt 199 to Rt 60 west (southward).  The Best Western Motel is 100 yards on the left.

Ride to Morton's BMW open house.  Rider Leader Marvin.  See pictures of our rest stop.
