Monterey Virginia

Highland Inn

17 -19 June 2005

We went up route 143 and paralleled the expressway at times with Bob providing great ride leadership.  Eventually we got on US-60 to Richmond.  We took I-295 around Richmond but soon dropped off to take Route 6 toward I-81.  It was I-81 north a short ways to Route 250 which runs thru Staunton and to Monterrey.  There was some construction but on the whole the road was nice.  We arrive late that after noon, but don’t remember exactly when.  Too much fun doing the twisties from Staunton to check the time.  Sunday the return trip left at 9:00 am and headed south on US-220 for a pleasant morning ride to Route 39 which took us to US-60 near where the interstates meet.  We took US-60 thru Amherst.  Not wanting to go to Richmond we dropped south via US-15 toward Farmville and US-460 and some more easterly riding.  It was a little tricky following US-460 as it joined I-85 north (construction) and then switches to I-95 south.  But eventually we got off US-460 and took Route 106 east toward the James River and Route 5 into Williamsburg.  It was all down hill from there

with Marvin there to give advice and see us off.

The Highland Inn (ad).  No old cars there when we arrived.  The photo is deceptive as it is taken from the middle of the street and makes it look like there is lots of room in front.  Still it is a nice hotel.

This is the main staircase in the lobby.  You can see into the library thru the far wall.  Dinning room to the right and bar is to the right of the stairs.

The inside view of the library.  Sorry for the blurriness.

At the first landing is this nice old looking clock.

Hall Decorations.

One of the hallways to the rooms.

Living room of one of the suites.  Fan in the window and a small window air conditioning unit just out of sight.  Had a full bath off the living room.

Suite Bed in the small bedroom.  Sink on one wall with bathroom (shower and toilet).
Members setting on the upper porch after arriving at the hotel.

The Saturday day trippers at Seneca Rock.  There were climbers on the rock while we were there.
